Dr. Andrew Koricich

Student Success in Rural Communities

Dr. Andrew Koricich is an Associate Professor and program director for the Higher Education Program in the Reich College of Education at Appalachian State University, and a Research Fellow with the Education Policy Center at the University of Alabama. Influenced by his experiences growing up in a rural, Pennsylvania town, Dr. Koricich’s research interests focus primarily on issues regarding the postsecondary pathways of rural populations, rural and rural-serving postsecondary institutions, and how community factors influence students’ choices and outcomes. He has recently written about the effects of rurality and local economics on the college attendance and choice patterns of rural youth, the role of rural community colleges in modern workforce preparation, and other topics related to postsecondary education for rural residents. Dr. Koricich is beginning to examine the effects of driving distance on student finances and outcomes. Across these research strands, he primarily employs large, quantitative data sets from governmental and proprietary sources for statistical. His work has been published in journals such as Review of Higher Education and book chapters, including a forthcoming chapter in the Higher Education: Handbook of Theory and Research series that proposes a new college choice model.

Dr. Koricich’s work has been recognized with several awards, and, in 2012, he was selected as a fellow for the National Data Institute sponsored jointly by AIR, NCES and NSF. In addition to external consulting, Dr. Koricich has been invited to speak to numerous organizations, including the American Association of State Colleges & Universities, National Scholarship Providers Association, The Ford Family Foundation, the Oregon Community College Association, and The Pew Charitable Trusts/Senate Economic Mobility Caucus. Dr. Koricich earned his Ph.D. in Higher Education from Pennsylvania State University, an M.B.A. from Johns Hopkins University, and a B.S. in Information Sciences & Technology, also from Penn State. Before joining the faculty at ASU, he was a faculty member at Texas Tech, and prior to working in academia, Dr. Koricich spent several years as a software development manager in Washington, D.C.
